Class 2 Electric Bikes
Class 2: Electric bikes that also have a maximum speed of 20 mph, but are throttle-assisted.
The State of Michigan allows Class 2 e-bikes on all roads and bike lanes. Most are not allowed on linear paved trails (asphalt, limestone, or rail trail) or non-motorized trails (but is based on location). Class 2 electric bikes are allowed on motorized, natural surface trails (like ORV trails).
A throttle-assisted e-bike provides power to the motor without needing to pedal. This assistance is a beneficial feature for those who need quick bursts of power (say, to cross a busy street), get tired while biking easily, or if you want to work a little less on your ride home.
