Of course, specs aren’t everything! How does it ride? Will it fit my 29-inch inseam? What are its pros/cons?
We ride bikes almost every day and feel that our (and our customers) experiences with both bikes may be helpful when deciding which one might be best for you.
Our opinion on the Dart:
The Dart is ideal for power. The 500W rear hub motor offers quick takeoff with either throttle or pedal assist. This could be an advantage to those looking to feel the acceleration. On the other hand, it can feel overwhelming for some who are not used to riding e-bikes or are not interested in speed. The thumb throttle is situated right next to the pedal-assist buttons, which is a plus for us when operating the functions and simplifying the handlebar. The throttle only engages when the bike is on at least pedal assist level 1.
Wider tires help with traction and add a little bit of comfort when riding on uneven terrain or passing through debris. The wide-swept handlebars and stem lets you move from a bent seated position to fully upright with just a few adjustments.
Sizing is ideal for a majority of people. The Small fits riders 4’11” to 5’4”, and the Medium fits 5’4” to 5’10”. Compared to the Cosmopolitan, the Dart accommodates smaller riders better. We have noticed that some riders struggle with getting in and out of the bike, especially if they have knee pains as the battery is on top of and not integrated into the frame’s downtube.
One of our favorite aspects about the Dart is its display. It is bright, looks like a smartphone, and is front and center. We can see all meters without having to squint, even on a sunny day.
The hydraulic disc brakes are a nice feature for the price point. While this can add to maintenance, most of the time we have noticed riders will have their brakes serviced with their yearly tune-up.
Our opinion on the Cosmopolitan:
The Magnum Cosmopolitan e-bike is packed with add-ons without sacrificing price. The Cosmo fits the bill with a rear rack, fender set, single suspension, and light set.
The 350W rear hub motor is more subtle than the Dart. We have noticed that the pedal-assist acceleration takes off after the first pedal revolution. This is beneficial for riders who want to anticipate the power or don’t want to take off like a rocket.
The twist throttle can be turned on or off with the press of a button. It can override the pedal-assist or be used when the assist is off. Some riders have noted that it is to remember to power the throttle on or off when biking.
The Cosmo comes in one frame size, making it more of one size fits most. The 700c tires add to the bike's height, so riders with smaller inseams may find the stance a little tall. The integrated battery makes stepping through easy, and this style gives more space to get on and off the bike.
The display is smaller than other Magnum models, and we’ve noticed that it can be hard to read. That being said, the bike’s ride is relatively intuitive, and you begin to understand your assist levels without always looking down. Still, it would be nice not to squint when checking the battery level from time to time.
Still having trouble deciding?
In our opinion, if you want power and speed, look at the Serfas Dart.
If you’re in the market for something more subtle with more included accessories, take a gander at the Magnum Cosmopolitan.
