Pedego Boomerang & Boomerang Plus Overview

Today I wanted to chat with you about the Pedego Boomerang and Boomerang Plus electric bikes. This step-through frame is a great option for anyone looking for the comfort of the Interceptor but in an easier to handle frame. While the Boomerang & Boomerang Plus ebikes are similar, they have distinct differences that we’ll go over.

The Boomerang models’ ideal sizing is for any rider between 5’4” and 5’11”. It’s especially great for anyone with back or knee problems that find it difficult to lift their legs over the top tube. Just lift your feet over 9-inches, and next thing you know you’re just about ready to ride.

So, what do the Boomerang and Boomerang Plus have in common?

They’re the same frame styles and many of the technical features, like the brakes, shifter, etc. are the same.

And the differences?

The Boomerang is going to have the 36V battery (in either 10 or 15-Ah) whereas the Boomerang Plus ebike will have a 48V battery (in either 10 or 15-Ah). The 36V battery is going to be the more affordable of the two options, which is why you’ll see the price difference between the two. The 48V battery will be the more powerful option, perfect for larger riders and riding on hilly terrain.

Also, the Boomerang Plus features a third frame color option in Mineral Blue (ooh).

The Boomerang Plus also comes readily equipped with upgraded balloon tires, grips, and seat. The balloon tires will allow for a smoother ride. The Boomerang electric bike comes with standard white wall tires. The Boomerang Plus can also be upgraded to Mag Wheels. Mag Wheels are designed for larger riders, and it's essentially a beefier tire to allow the rider to have a smoother ride while elongating the lifetime of the wheel and bike.

The Boomerang Plus is also equipped with a head and rear light, whereas the Boomerang only includes a rear light.

The biggest difference between the two will be the fact that the Pedego Boomerang only has throttle whereas the Boomerang Plus offer both throttle and pedal assist. Throttle is going to be great for quick spurts of full power, so you can have a break between pedaling. Pedal assist will have a natural-feeling ride, giving you power without much thought. For Pedego, their pedal assist will have five levels, giving you higher increments of power with every level increase.

Pedego Boomerang Plus Review

We've never had the regular Boomerang in the shop, so I should mention that I haven't ridden the Boomerang before - just the Boomerang Plus, so this won't be a comparison review.

When you look at the Boomerang Plus, even in the mineral blue color, it looks fierce - even more so with the upgraded Mag wheels. Don't be fooled by the step-thru look. The Boomerang Plus reminds me of a super low-step version of the Interceptor. They both have similarities, such as the battery type (48V 10 or 15Ah), headlights, weight, and acceleration modes (throttle and pedal assist).

I can imagine such a low-step frame being great for anyone with back issues or those having a hard time getting over the top tube of a diamond frame. For me, while I don't necessarily need the super low-step, it was pretty mindless when getting on the bike. One little step over, and I was ready to ride.

Overall, the ride was smooth. The suspension seatpost was helpful for any bumps, and the balloon tires are a little wider, which allow some more absorption of any uneven terrain.

Pedal assist is always a big plus, in my opinion. Throttle is particularly helpful for any sort of hills we have. In West Michigan, we were founded on sand dunes, so we always have at least a little bit of hills to conquer. The 48V battery is also a big help with those hills. If you are to choose a battery, I would choose the 48V 15Ah option. While it's more expensive (an extra $300) the increased distance and power is worth the upgrade cost.

The technology is good - imagine it just being like an Interceptor: smooth brakes (even in sudden stops) and easy gear shifts. Honestly, nothing to complain about on that front.

The only "con" I would mention is like all electric bikes, the Boomerang Plus is heavy. At 52-pounds (frame-only) with a 9-pound battery, it adds up. Anyone who may have trouble lifting might want to have someone else pick up the bike (if you plan on placing it in a truck or a hitch).

Well, there you have it, a brief review of the Boomerang Plus. It's a fun electric bike that is perfect for just about anyone - it's definitely worth giving a ride!
